Flexible creative composition workshops for school-age students, delivered by our musicians.
Composition Challenges
Each Composition Challenge explores a different contemporary composer’s music and approach, supporting curriculum learning and helping young people engage with creative composition.
Our Composition Challenges are designed to be easy to use, flexible, and open to everyone–from complete beginners to those with more experience. A short film, supported by a teacher pack, guides you through each challenge, with a variety of activities to get your class composing.
We work with our partners in the North London Music Hub, Gloucestershire, Southampton and the Isle of Wight to deliver Composition Challenge workshops specially tailored to schools, led by London Sinfonietta composers and musicians. If you are a school in one of these areas and would be interested in a workshop, please get in touch!
Any school can submit their compositions for us to share and perform at our flagship Sound Out Schools Concert each March, and in online concerts.
Composition Challenges 2025-26 is kindly supported by the Boris Karloff Charitable Foundation, John Lyon’s Charity, Karlsson Játiva Charitable Foundation’s Signatur Programme, Margaret Engering Music Trust, Radcliffe Trust, Samuel Gardner Memorial Trust, Simon Gibson Charitable Trust, Thistle Trust and Andrew Johnson.
