HENZE’S VOICES / KLEIN – HOLLAND FESTIVAL
Klein is a London-based outsider musician and artist working across composition, film and performance. Entirely self-taught, she moves between noise, contemporary composition and the odd grime freestyle, drawing on surveillance, urban folklore, humour and hip hop to construct fragmented worlds where fact and fiction blur.
Siren is a 10-minute composition for voice and ensemble derived from the oscillation of a UK police siren. With the musicians facing away from the audience, the work stages a game of concealment within the ensemble. A prepared instrument operates as an embedded [redacted] presence, surfacing through live improvisation. The work examines surveillance and the limits of free will, framing the siren as a mechanism of state power rather than public safety.
The programme features three new commissions, which like Henze’s Voices, provide a response to issues of today.
